INTRODUCTION
Ahoy Educators,
The Santa Barbara Maritime Museum invites you to take advantage of the
many exciting educational opportunities in the upcoming year. Since
its inception, the Maritime Museum has been dedicated to the preservation
and cultivation of the Central Coast’s rich maritime history,
emphasizing education as the primary objective. We are excited to offer
a variety of youth education programs that allow students to step back
into history, explore science and math, and connect to literature and
art as they learn more about the mysteries of the sea.
At the core of the Museum’s education efforts is an active program
for school groups visiting the museum. Highly-trained docents guide
students through the Museum to learn about the local fishing industry,
harbor and maritime history, and the unique marine environment in the
Santa Barbara Channel. The Diving Deeper Workshops, science & history-based
activities, allow students to apply the knowledge gathered during their
group tour through hands-on exploration. A trip aboard the Merry Time
rolling yacht challenges students to develop their navigational skills
as they captain the vessel along a set course, while Sea Song Sing-a-longs
transport participants back to a time of exploration and discovery.
Our programs are designed to be engaging, fun, and educational while
complementing the grade-specific state curriculum standards.
Santa Barbara and the Sea is a 3rd and 4th grade curriculum packet developed
by the Maritime Museum as an educational and cultural resource for teachers
and their students. The first unit, Chumash Maritime History, contains
four lessons, focusing on the Chumash tomol (plank canoe) that played
a central role in the native culture. The Santa Barbara and the Sea
curriculum packet is a valuable interdisciplinary tool that teachers
can integrate into the classroom.
In addition to these exciting educational opportunities, the Maritime
Museum offers educational overnight programs aboard the Spirit of Dana
Point tall ship, live broadcasts from the Immersion Presents: Secrets
of the Gulf Expedition in the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary
and other enriching programs throughout the year.
We hope you and your students will join us for our truly unique educational
opportunities here at the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum!
Sincerely,

Julie McDonald, Executive Director

CURRICULUM
Santa Barbara & the Sea
Unit One:
Chumash Maritime History
The Santa Barbara and the Sea Curriculum has been developed for 3rd
and 4th grade students and provides participants with an interactive
educational experience. Unit One focuses on the maritime history of
the native Chumash people with a primary emphasis on the tomol, the
Chumash plank canoe. This unit consists of four lessons which allow
students to understand the historical & cultural significance of
the tomol, examine the daily uses of this unique watercraft, investigate
the tomol construction process, and compare past & present tomol
building techniques. The interactive lesson plans provide teachers with
the information and resources to educate students on the maritime history
of Native Americans of the Central Coast. We invite you to integrate
the Santa Barbara and the Sea curriculum into your History and Social
Studies lessons!

CHART YOUR COURSE
Merry Time Rolling Yacht
The Maritime Museum recently acquired a new vessel — our own rolling
yacht, aptly named Merry Time! The brainchild of one of the museum docents,
the Merry Time is an outreach tool that provides land loving students
the opportunity to navigate a course here at the Museum. This educational
instrument was realized out of the need for a more interactive learning
tool when faced with the challenge of presenting the topic of navigation.
Prior to boarding, students must complete “captain’s training”,
a handout of exercises beginning with the navigation basics and gradually
moving forward to more challenging navigation topics. The Merry Time
vessel can be incorporated as part of the activities in a school group’s
tour of the Museum and is a great activity for school science fairs.
Arrangements for the Merry Time yacht must be made one month prior to
the visit.

CHANTEY PROGRAM
Sea Song Sing-a-long
Sing along with one of the Museum’s musician educators. Sailors
not only sang as they worked, they often passed their few hours of rest
with song as well. Their music tells the stories about life at sea and
ashore — stories best learned by joining in a chorus, picturing
the events in a ballad or using a chantey as a tool to help accomplish
hard work.

Immersion Presents & The Spirit of Dana Point
Immersion Presents is a fun and powerful science education program for
kids in grades 5-8. Famed oceanographer and explorer Dr. Robert Ballard
founded Immersion Presents in 2002, and since then he’s brought
hundreds of thousands of kids and their families along with him on amazing
scientific expeditions throughout the world.
In March 2007, Dr. Ballard and his team of scientists will mount an
expedition to explore the Gulf of Mexico, with a primary emphasis on
the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary, located 100 miles
off the Texas coast. The Flower Gardens and other “ocean oases”
provide a unique setting for the exploration of the human and natural
history of the critical Gulf region of the U.S.
Through groundbreaking robotic and communication technologies the Maritime
Museum will offer students and teachers the opportunity to participate
in the live expedition as the scientists conduct the exploration. Live
broadcasts will air in the state-of-the-art Munger Theater during the
5-day expedition via satellite. In addition to the live broadcasts,
the Maritime Museum offers fun, engaging, hands-on activities organized
around the Secrets of the Gulf Expedition. These activities, covering
geology, biology, technology, history, and math, are designed to educate
and entertain, and feature interactive educational materials designed
to spark scientific minds.

SPIRIT
OF DANA POINT
Tall Ship Education Program
The Santa Barbara Maritime Museum is thrilled to present the Spirit
of Dana Point Tall Ship Education Program for the 5th consecutive year.
This maritime program brings history alive through the recreation of
the life of a nineteenth century sailor aboard a tall ship. The Spirit
Program has been developed for 4th grade students and is based on Richard
Henry Dana Jr.’s book Two Years Before the Mast. Students are
immersed in the unique world Dana faced as he rounded Cape Horn on his
voyage to Alta California aboard the overnight program on Spirit. Students
explore man’s relationship with the ocean, gain an appreciation
for our maritime heritage, and understand the concept of ‘historical
perspectives’ and ‘interpretation’. Through challenging
hands on activities students develop problem solving, critical thinking,
communication, and teamwork skills.
A 5th grade program based on the novel Carry On, Mr. Bowditch recreates
an adventuresome three-year Mediterranean bound trading voyage in which
students have signed on as sailors to escape the economic crisis in
Salem caused by the Revolutionary War. In order to survive the turbulent
life at sea, students must learn to navigate, defend, and maintain their
ship while trading in foreign ports.
The program curriculum offers interdisciplinary lessons in math, science,
language arts, social studies, and music. Additionally, the professionally
developed curriculum is aligned with the California State Content Standards
and highlights California’s rich maritime history.
The Spirit of Dana Point Tall Ship Education Program runs during the
spring months of April and May and culminates with the Maritime Museum’s
annual Sea Festival. Sign up your class for an overnight adventure of
a lifetime!
PARTNERSHIPS
Ocean Institute
The Santa Barbara Maritime Museum partners with the Ocean Institute
of Dana Point to bring one of our most unique programs yet to the Santa
Barbara community. Each spring the Spirit of Dana Point, a 118' schooner,
owned and operated by the Ocean Institute, visits Santa Barbara Harbor
to serve as the platform for our Tall Ship Education Program that serves
over 400 children each season through in class exploration and 13 overnight
education programs. See a more complete description of the Tall Ship
Education Program above. The Maritime Museum's annual Sea Festival celebrates
the Spirit of Dana Point and the rich maritime history that she represents.
During the course of the Festival, visitors have the opportunity to
step back in time aboard this replica tall ship, walking the decks,
hoisting the lines and even setting sail on the enchanting vessel. Additionally,
other Ocean Institute vessels, such as the Pilgrim, a full size replica
of the hide brig immortalized by Richard Henry Dana, Jr. in his American
seafaring classic novel Two Years Before the Mast, grace our harbor
throughout the year.
Jason
Project
In past years, the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum has had the honor to
host the JASON Project, an annual, interactive, science-based, educational
experience for local students and teachers. Using satellite technology,
JASON allowed students to interact in real time with scientists working
in the field around the world.
Dr. Robert Ballard, the oceanographer and explorer who discovered the
wreck of the Titanic founded this unique program in 1989. Impressed
by the interest that students showed in his discovery, Dr. Ballard started
JASON to further their curiosity in scientific exploration. The museum
served as a local connection for students, hosting this program. The
Museum continues to serve as a venue for children to explore marine
environments, working with Dr. Robert Ballard’s Immersion Presents
Program.
Wyland Ocean Challenge
World famous Ocean Muralist Wyland teamed up with the Scripps Institution
of Oceanography to create an 11-city west-coast tour entitled the Wyland
Ocean Challenge. The tour, which arrived at the Santa Barbara Maritime
Museum on November 19, 2003, focused on teaching children grades kindergarten
through 6th about water quality and the importance of clean oceans.
The event culminated in the creation of a 16-foot mural that Wyland
himself painted with selected children from participating schools. Over
the course of the two sessions 500 local students participated in the
Challenge!
