Docent-Guided Tours for Groups

During a docent-guided tour, volunteer educators engage visitors in active viewing and discussion of topics relating to the Museum’s exhibits and maritime history.

Reservations for docent guided tours must be made at least two weeks in advance of your planned visit. Tours typically require 45 minutes but can be adapted to fit the needs of the group.

Docent-Guided Harbor Tours

Explore Santa Barbara’s working harbor as a Museum docent leads your group on a tour of the harbor’s unique features, outstanding vessels and historic roots. With a long fishing history in the Santa Barbara Channel, the harbor serves as a key component in our local community. In touring the harbor, students discover more about our rich maritime history, community structure & the sea animals driving the industry. Harbor tours may be scheduled as part of your group tour. Weather depending.

Tours can be arranged for a fee of $1.50 per person in addition to the admission fee.

Learn the Basics of SB’s Maritime History
EVERY Saturday: 2 pm, 2:30 pm, 3 pm & 3:30 pm

Why is Santa Barbara home to much of the world’s diving innovation? What whales are off our coast now? How does a sextant differ from an octant? Come in and find out! One of our knowledgeable docents will be on deck ready to answer all your maritime questions from 2-4 pm at the top and bottom of the hours (2 pm, 2:30 pm, 3 pm & 3:30 pm).  Additionally, the docent will lead a 10-minute “Maritime Essentials” tour. The tour content spans over 1,000 years of maritime history, beginning with Santa Barbara’s earliest seafarers, the Chumash, up through today’s waterfront attractions.

$: FREE with Museum admission
